Bundesliga 2021 – English
For the first time in 2021, Sport Positive has systematically collated key environmental sustainability information for every Bundesliga football club into a table matrix. The categories reflect the environmental impacts of putting on a football match, and initiatives that are under way at clubs, put together in an easy and digestible format.
Points are awarded to clubs for any work that is under way, with more points available to those that are working strategically across all club operations, that engage with fans and encourage positive behavioural change and that show long term commitment to combatting climate change.
Access the document to see how points are allocated here
Like us all, these clubs are on a journey and have plans or the desire to do more, with announcements expected as soon as the next couple of weeks that will change the rankings again. Keep checking back for updates on your club’s progress. Our ethos is to share information and increase climate ambition, and a league table is the easiest way to disseminate this information. We must all work together to combat climate change, we are #sportpositive.
We have highlighted 1 or 2 key initiatives per category on the table dropdown, please click through on the ‘More information’ link below that for more exhaustive results.
Information correct as of 7th April 2021.

Mainz 05 declared itself the first climate-neutral soccer club in the Bundesliga after switching to 100% renewable energies through their partnership with the energy supplier Entega. One of the three largest solar roof systems for soccer stadiums in Germany was built on the roof of the OPEL ARENA, which generates around 700,000 kWh of electricity annually and feeds it into the public grid.
Mainz 05 was the first Bundesliga club to receive the energy certificate according to DIN EN ISO 50001 from TÜV Rheinland in 2016 and was awarded for the third time in a row in 2018. 1. FSV Mainz 05 continues to work in an environmentally friendly manner, so that the energy management system has received an energy certificate for the fifth year in a row.
Mainz 05 promotes the arrival of fans by public transport. The home game ticket in the OPEL ARENA is valid as a combined ticket for travel to and from the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) and the Rhein-Nahe-Nahverkehrverbund (RNN). There is currently no systemic policy, but active work is being done on it, especially in the B2C area. For example, this year's green away shirt is made from 100% recycled PET material. There are still many examples of single-use plastic removal initiatives. Reusable cup system in the public area of the stadium.
Home stadium and events: The amount of waste generated is regularly analysed. Among other things, it is separated into glass, paper, residual waste from the grandstand: this will be put in the garbage compactor (compressed garbage, residual garbage), metal: recycling centre.

The WWK ARENA is the first climate-neutral football stadium in the world. The majority is achieved with two large heat pumps. These use the near-surface geothermal energy and form the core of the energy system. In view of onside generation at both locations, as well as the decision to use renewable energy sources for all external inputs, at least 80% of the total energy consumed and provided at all locations of the association comes from renewable sources.
An energy management system is in place and various measures to improve energy efficiency are being implemented at all locations. 12,000 litres of water can now be heated to 60 degrees Celsius using a heating system. This means that the VIP and lounge areas as well as the changing rooms and the offices in the WWK ARENA can be heated during the cold months of the year. This energy is also sufficient to cover the underfloor heating.
At home games, fans can use public transport free of charge if they have bought a ticket for the game. Special trains are organized for fans for away games. Buses bring fans from all over southern Germany to Augsburg and back again. Conducted fan survey.
Efforts to reduce single-use plastics cover all of the association's locations, but this is not guided by a systemic single-use plastics policy. The catering company controls the reduction of plastic waste. Cups, plates and trays are recyclable.
The club operates a progressive waste management system, in which 65% of the waste is diverted from the landfill and can be processed and recycled within the circular economy. Different types of waste are separated, such as plastic, paper, glass, green, scrap, electronic and residual waste.
The automation of the drinking water system in the stadium and technical measures such as flow limiters became the water consumer. This is gilded for everyone. The irrigation of the sports fields is coordinated by the amount of rain.
In the business area, mainly regional products are processed. Pretzels are offered to fans in the stadium, no other vegan or vegetarian options.
FCA supports Earth Hour 2021 - the outdoor lighting of the WWK Arena was switched off for 1 hour. Due to the current pandemic, investments in sustainability are limited. Nevertheless, a project group was formed to intensify the commitment in this area. Colleagues from different departments work together on topics such as energy, water systems, mobility, catering and waste.
