Policy and Commitment

- The club is a signatory of EFL Green Clubs.
Clean/Renewable Energy
- 44.6% of the stadium’s energy is from clean energy.
- The club is looking at increasing the percentage of clean energy across all of its sites. The club’s Brooklands building is currently solar powered. Two additional facilities are in the planning stages.
Energy Efficiency
- Is actively monitoring its energy consumptions and has action plans in place by departments to reduce usage or operate sustainably.
- The club is rolling out LED luminaires across the Stadium MK Group. This investment is estimated at £285k over the next 3 financial years. The club has already committed to its first two phases. Phase 1 is replacing 100 streetlights to LED luminares with a top of the range control system that will yield further energy savings. Phase 2 is to replace the High Bay luminares in the Marshall Arena
- Building Management System (BMS) has been upgraded to ensure the club has good control and parameter settings on its lights, HVAC.
- West Stand lifts are being replaced with more energy efficient lifts.
- At Stadium MK, the DoubleTree by Hilton Milton Keynes hotel (which is built into the stadium) achieved an award-winning initiative from Hilton called “Lightstay”. This is measured by the club’s Quality Audit of which it is fully compliant and meets the required standards.
Sustainable Transport
- Cycling and public transport options (train and bus) to Stadium MK are promoted on the club’s website.
- Cycle parking is available near gate numbers 1 and 5.
- A station for the Santander Cycles MK bike-sharing scheme is located outside Gate 1 at Stadium MK. The Santander Cycles MK bikes can be hired from and returned to the existing bike racks near the stadium.
- The club offers a bike to work scheme.
- Provides park and ride and shuttle bus services from CMK Railway station for larger events.
- A 6-vehicle Ultra-Fast EV Charge Hub has been installed on site.
Single Use Plastic Reduction/Removal
- Installed a water filter in the dressing room and provided all players with their own reusable water bottle.
- Removed plastic straws and replaced with a paper alternative.
- Education packages provide participants with re-usable water bottles.
Waste Management
- Grundon Waste Management has been Stadium MK’s waste management provider since 2015 and has:
- Achieved zero waste to landfill by installing large compactors.
- Generated green electricity for export to the National Grid
- Introduced a dedicated food waste collection service.
- Added a new hazardous waste collection service.
- Installed two new larger compactors.
- Reduced the number of waste collections and vehicle movements.
- Installed new colour-coded waste bins in offices and outside concourses.
- Grundon advises the Stadium MK team on how to stay compliant with waste regulations such as hazardous waste and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) which together range from batteries, aerosols and chemicals to light bulbs and unwanted fridges and freezers. Larger items are collected by arrangement.
- Grundon has installed its Haz-Box containers which provide a place to store hazardous waste until there is enough to be collected.
- Monthly certification documents are provided to Stadium MK that act as clear evidence of its approach towards responsible waste management, whilst annual waste statements show how overall improvements are being made year-on-year.
- The club recycles and measures the waste output of; all glass products, old cooking oil, food waste, WEE (old lamps, batteries, fridges), old metal waste and cardboard.
- Used soap bars are recycled.
- Plastics on the concourse are recycled.
- All facilities managed by MK Dons Sports & Education Trust (SET) have recycling bins for plastic disposal.
Water Efficiency
- Currently, the club’s water supplier tracks the amount of water being used on the pitch to identify potential savings. The supplier is in the process of a full water audit of the site to identify further savings.
- Operates waterless urinals.
Plant based/low carbon food
- All food outlets, including concessions, have plant based options. These include a Phat Pasty Vegan Cauliflower & Spinach Balti Pie or a V Kitchen Plant Based Sausage Roll.
- Plant based restaurant/bar menu food options include; Falafel with Salsa, BBQ Jackfruit Panini (topped with vegan applewood cheese), Vegan BBQ Jackfruit Pizza, Fries, Sweet Potato Fries, Triple Cooked Fries and Onion Rings.
- Only uses free-range eggs that are locally sourced. Pate and pies are also locally sourced.
- MK Dons’ procurement process requires its suppliers to help the club achieve its environmental/sustainable goals.
Biodiversity
- Environmental activities undertaken at the club’s Fairfields site include wildflower hedging and tree planting.
Education
- Environmental projects form MK Dons Sport and Education Trust’s social action projects with players, schools and community organisations e.g., a Sky Ocean Rescue workshop to discuss the damage that single-use plastic pollution can cause in our oceans.
Communication and Engagement

- The MK Dons SET encouraged fans via its Facebook page to help support the club in Planet League’s ‘Planet League Cup’ competition, by taking climate action
- Held an initial meeting with Litterlotto (an organisation that incentivises and rewards positive action towards litter and the environment) about a local campaign. The club is scheduling a contribution at its training ground for Litterlotto’s national campaign during the club’s Easter Camp.
