Policy and Commitment

Clean/Renewable Energy
- Current electricity fuel mix includes 47% renewable electricity (7% above UK average fuel mix for the reporting period)
- Renewable energy provider is in the tender process and offsetting options being reviewed
Energy Efficiency
- CFC/all site operates on a Building Management System programmed to reduce energy use and optimise energy efficiency with set points checked regularly
- LED lights throughout all CFC properties, including flood lights
- During pandemic we worked on further reducing our energy output while the sites were closed
- Training facility meets ‘excellent’ BREEAM standard (advised 2019)
Sustainable Transport
- CFC operate subsidised coach travel and on occasions train travel, to reduce fans travelling by car to away matches; advertised for every away match excluding London matches
- Electric car chargers installed at the training ground/Cobham during last 18 months, available to staff and players
- Hyundai, Chelsea’s Global Automotive Partner, provide the Club with Kona electric vehicles which are used by staff to travel to away games and between sites
- Hyundai have also offered a free Kona electric leasing scheme to the Women’s team, with 13 players taking this option up
- Along with the Club, Hyundai have installed numerous charging units at Chelsea’s Cobham Training Centre to encourage the use of electric vehicles
- Stamford Bridge site – reviewing plans to double the bike storage to encourage further staff to bike to work
Single Use Plastic Reduction/Removal
- Up to 15,000 non-branded reusable cups have replaced single-use plastic pint cups on match days
- 2000 reusable cups provided for staff
- Plastic bags have been removed from retail units
- Other single use plastic is being reviewed
- Chelsea’s 2021/22 match kits are composed of 100% recycled polyester fabric, which is made from recycled plastic bottles
Waste Management
- Waste management policy extends to and is consistent across all sites
- 100% of waste is diverted from going directly to landfill
- Since the last review we have successfully implemented a waste segregation system across our sites with food, plastics and dry mixed recyclables segregated from general waste
- All general waste is sent for incineration with energy recovery
Water Efficiency
- To reduce water usage, a management system has been introduced ranging from presence detection to foaming units
- All urinals across both Cobham and Stamford Bridge are also operated via smart flush systems that ensure that water is used as and when required
- Sensor taps installed throughout the estate
- Rainwater collected in reservoir at Cobham training ground, smart flush toilets
- Continue to look for better ways to reduce water usage across both Cobham and Stamford Bridge
Plant based/low carbon food
- Menus below extend to stadium, training facility, academy and staff
- Levy Restaurants at Chelsea Football Club
Our food:
- Majority of menus (90%+) UK sourced and in season produce (Variable is due to availability)
- 35% plant-based and plant-forward menu composition for non-match days
- Suppliers with high welfare standards and commitments to net zero (Supply chain)
- Ingredient replication across menus to reduce food waste
- Switched to reusable and recyclable packaging and consumables
- Kitchen food waste minimalised through several initiatives on site
- CFC Express – pre-order app used to provide more inclusive food and beverage options, including more vegetarian and vegan offers
Our beverage:
- Reduce and where possible remove single use plastic non-recyclable beverage items
- Partner with suppliers who are Fairtrade, committed to net zero, and where possible are producing in UK
- Serve drinks in reusable cups where feasible and compostable / recyclable containers where appropriate
- Working with Facilities to recycle all drinks related waste into correct waste streams
Our people:
- Train our teams on sustainable working practices
- Minimise unnecessary commuting and business travel
- Educate our customers about what we’re doing and why we’re doing it
- Encourage customers and colleagues to make more sustainable choices
- Enable our guests to reuse and recycle food waste and consumables
- Our Food & Beverage contracted caterers actively promote vegan options, locally sourced, seasonal foods
Biodiversity
- Maintain our natural area at the training ground, trees/shrubs/lake
- There is a sedum roof on the first team building
- Biodiversity is a top agenda point for future strategy
Education
- 3 full time staff completed the sustainability training course provided by BASIS -The British Association for Sustainable Sport.
- Event Manager completed The Complete Sustainable Events Course facilitated by Isla and regularly attends forums/courses/presentations on sustainability and reports back to the working group, to further educate on making events/the club more sustainable.
- Football for the Future/Nike Education courses delivered at Stamford Bridge to 200 young people between the ages of 11 and 14, to:
- Use the power of football to engage young Londoners on the topic of sustainability
- Drive awareness of Nike’s global sustainability initiative (Move to Zero) and the Next Nature Nike ball
- To engage young Londoners on the topic of football and the environment
- Chelsea FC player, Mason Mount, provided a video message to welcome the pupils to the workshop
- To raise awareness for the initiative social content was published across CFC channels post event
- CFC Staff education programme is in progress – to be delivered in 2022
- Looking to introduce to players/youth team as part of our drive in 2022
