• PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE USECRYSTAL PALACE’S SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL PLAN FOR SELHURST PARK
• Crystal Palace Football Club is launching a new sustainable transport strategy, incentivising supporters to take public transport to matches.
• The club has commissioned expert transport consultants Mott Macdonald to draw up the first ever Travel Plan for Selhurst Park to support its planning application to build a new Main Stand, increasing the stadium’s capacity to 34,000.
• Under the plan, targets will be set to reduce car use by supporters and staff, so that within five years more than half of supporters are taking public transport to matches.
• If planning permission for the New Stand is granted on April 19th an action plan would be put in place, promoting a series of sustainable travel measures, which could include:
• Offering discounted public transport vouchers to supporters buying tickets to home matches
• Exploring with residents and Croydon Council the introduction of match day parking permits to reduce congestion near the stadium and introducing possible parking charges for the stadium
• Creating a new Transport Working Group with local public transport providers to improve services, especially on match days
• Designating some matches Sustainable Travel Days when supporters will be actively encouraged to leave their cars at home
• Promoting car share schemes amongst supporters
• Installing cycle parking facilities around the stadium
• Introducing Electric charging points
• The objective is to reduce car usage by offering better travel options, reducing the environmental impact and to be a good neighbour by reducing the overall impact of transport on the area. The plan will also encourage staff to walk, cycle or take public transport to work.
• The targets set under the plan will see the percentage of supporters using a train or bus increasing from 46% to 51% within five years while the percentage driving to matches would fall from 35% to 30%. Targets are also being set to reduce car usage by supporters enjoying corporate hospitality.
• The report says: “The Transport Plan aims to demonstrate Crystal Palace Football Club’s commitment to creating a sustainable development for the whole Stadium and wider area of Croydon, which promotes the use of walking, cycling and public transport and will reduce reliance on the private car.“A number of measures will be implemented immediately upon granting of planning permission, recognising the opportunity to start influencing the travel behaviour of supporters and staff as soon as possible. There is a real opportunity to create positive behaviour change”.A Travel Plan co-ordinator would be appointed to implement the strategy, working in conjunction with Transport for London and Croydon Council.ENDS
